Gratitude transforms how we experience ourselves, our relationships, and the world. By noticing the gifts in our lives, we come to know interrelatedness and benevolence.

Hundreds of studies confirm that gratitude is a key aspect of wellbeing: improving physical health, strengthening relationships, buffering against the effects of stress, and enhancing overall happiness. And, thankfully, gratitude is a character strength we all can develop through practice!

In this experiential workshop, we will explore:

  • The science of gratitude
  • How mindfulness fosters appreciation
  • Navigating challenges that arise in accessing and expressing thanks
  • Daily practices for cultivating gratitude

“Listening is not a reaction, it is a connection.”

– Ursula Le Guinn

To listen with our full attention is the greatest gift we can give each other; it is an act of love. Yet how often do we find ourselves only halfheartedly present, distracted, or trying to figure out what we “should” say?

The simple but profound act of being completely present to another person, without judgments or an agenda, takes practice and commitment. In this experiential workshop, we will explore:

  • Listening with our whole selves: body, mind, and heart
  • Deeply receiving what we hear and mindfully responding
  • Developing intimacy through generous listening
  • Navigating the challenges that arise in offering complete presence

Cost: $30 in advance, $35 at the door

Conscious Nourishment: 4 - Week Class

Conscious Nourishment: 4 - Week Class

Dates:  4 Saturdays  (January 21, January 28, February 4, February 11) from 2:30 -4:30pm

Location: 131 Essex Street, Studio 4, New York, NY, 10002

Details: How we feed ourselves reflects how we feel about ourselves. For most people, our relationship with food is based in fear and rules. When consumed with thoughts about food — planning the next meal, counting calories, congratulating ourselves when we are “good” and castigating ourselves when we are “bad” — we are unable to inhabit our bodies and our lives fully.

Nourishment is not just about nutrition: we are also fed by the stories we tell ourselves about who we are, by movement and stillness, and by the people with whom we interact and the activities in which we choose to engage. But when we are disconnected from our inherent body-wisdom, we respond to our various hungers (physical, sensorial, emotional, relational, intellectual) by using or abusing food and our bodies.

In this class, we will explore our hungers with compassion and curiosity to awaken the body-wisdom we all possess. We will examine our current stories, imagine the stories we might prefer, and begin to implement new ways of nourishing ourselves in order to live new stories.

Through meditation, mindfulness, interpersonal exercises, and narrative practice, we will:

  • Examine our patterns and beliefs about food, hunger, and our bodies
  • Explore the many types of hunger: physical, sensorial, emotional, relational, intellectual
  • Experiment with using pleasure as a means to awaken our body-wisdom
  • Experience mindful eating practices
  • Cultivate new ways of nourishing ourselves!

SAMPLE CURRICULUM

Week 1: Introspection — What are our current eating patterns? What foods are we drawn to? What stories do we tell ourselves about the foods we’re craving? What is our relationship and history to those foods? What judgments are present?

Week 2: Our Many Hungers — How connected are we to our hunger cues? What are we actually hungry for? How do our senses play a role in our hungers? What energies are we craving that we could seek out in food (eg: eating root vegetables to ground and comfort ourselves)? What is “normal eating”?

Week 3: Mindful Eating — How can we practice mindfulness with our food? What does it feel like to eat mindfully? How can we cultivate an ongoing practice?

Week 4: The Physiology of Pleasure — What is our relationship to pleasure? How do we know what brings us pleasure? How can we learn to trust pleasure as a means to awaken our body-wisdom?

Space is limited to eight participants, so if you are interested, please RSVP soon.

Mindful Self-Compassion: 8-Week Course

Mindful Self-Compassion: 8-Week Course

Dates: 8 Saturdays, starting March 11 – May 6th, 2017)  2:00 –  5:00pm
(note: no class on Saturday, April 15)

Location: Lower Manhattan (specific location coming soon)

Details: Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) is an empirically-supported 8-week program developed by Christopher Germer, PhD, a leader in the integration of mindfulness and psychotherapy and Kristin Neff, PhD, a pioneering researcher in the field of self-compassion. MSC combines the skills of mindfulness and self-compassion to enhance our capacity for emotional wellbeing.

Burgeoning research shows that self-compassion is strongly associated with emotional wellbeing, coping with life challenges, lower levels of anxiety and depression, healthy habits such as diet and exercise, and more satisfying personal relationships.

In this 8-week program we will learn how to:

  • Turn with loving awareness toward difficult experience (thoughts, emotions, and sensations)
  • Bring loving awareness to ourselves
  • Cultivate the capacity to comfort and soothe ourselves
  • Motivate ourselves with encouragement, when we suffer, fail, or feel inadequate
  • Connect with our innate compassion for others
  • Grow and sustain our compassion for others

Most of us feel compassion when a close friend is struggling. But what would it be like to receive the same caring attention from yourself when you need it most? All that’s required is a shift in attention—recognizing that as a human being, you, too, are a worthy recipient of compassion.

Cost: $550
